Pregnancy Physiotherapy

Ensuring a peachy pregnancy, birth, recovery & adjustment to your new body!

Specialized pregnancy physiotherapy services for prenatal and postnatal care. Our therapists provide personalized support for a healthy pregnancy and smooth postpartum recovery.

Pre-natal physiotherapy

We can support in managing many of the symptoms related to the rapid changing of the pregnant body. But, we can also help you understand your pelvis better, and prepare your body for birth - no matter your delivery method.

Post-natal physiotherapy

Your pelvic physiotherapist helps you recover & nourish your own body, through your post-natal period. There can be a lot of changes to understand and manage, and we can also guide you through how, when and where to start your return to exercise!

Common Pre & Post-Natal Services

Pelvic floor muscle and organ position assessment (POP-Q)

We use this measure antenatally to guide your preparation of the perineal body and pelvic floor muscles for vaginal birth. Then, postnatally, use this measure to assess the levator hiatus (the openness of the vagina) which helps guide your rehabilitation and return to activity

Management of bladder concerns

Including bladder sensation issues (not knowing when the bladder is full and ready to empty);
bladder urgency (i.e. not feeling like you're going to make it to the toilet); leaking associated with urgency; incontinence with activity (like cough, sneeze, laugh, jump, run); pain with bladder filling or emptying; increased frequency of bladder emptying; or, not feeling like you can empty properly.

Management of bowel concerns

Including bowel sensation issues (urgency, reduced sensation of knowing when you need to empty, or not being able to tell the difference between wind or stool); incontinence of wind, liquid, or solid stool; constipation or incomplete emptying; or, not feeling like you're able to clean up properly afterwards.

Management of pelvic organ prolapse

If you experience the feeling of vaginal or anal dragging, heaviness or bulging. It might feel worse at the end of the day or after being on your feet for a while. Sometimes it feels worse at different points in your menstrual cycle. It may interfere with your ability to easily empty your bladder and bowel. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can play a role in helping you manage these symptoms and support your pelvic organs with exercise and the use of pelvic organ support pessary devices.

Return to intimacy and penetrative sex

Helping you safely understand when your body is ready to return to intimacy, and supporting you through any changes you experience, including pain with arousal, orgasm, or penetration, change in sensation or sexual satisfaction, libido or desire issues, and trauma recovery.

Individualised approach to pelvic floor muscle recovery and return to activity/exercise

Whether you've had a vaginal or belly birth, you've experienced pregnancy, and that means your body has undergone an epic change. Your abdomen and pelvic floor muscles need appropriate and progressive loading to help regain strength and tension in your body again. We can help you find the right approach to exercise that helps you feel stronger!

Lactation care

Treating mastitis, engorgement and blocked ducts using hands on techniques, ultrasound therapy, and education.

Rectus Diastasis recovery

If you've been pregnant, you've experienced rectus diastasis (abdominal separation). This is a stretching of the connective tissue that holds your 6-pack muscles together. Everyone will experience this, aka it's normal! Rehabilitating your abdominal muscles to help rebuild your strength and trunk control is important after your delivery.

Questions? We’ve got answers.

How do I know if I need to see a pregnancy physio?

As pelvic floor physiotherapists, we believe all pregnant people deserve to see a pelvic floor physio before the experience of birth (regardless of which birthing choice you make!)
You could find it especially helpful to consult a pelvic health physiotherapist, if you are experiencing any issues with:
  • Bladder or bowel continence or voiding (aka holding when you want to and feeling satisfied after you empty!)
  • Vaginal or rectal heaviness
  • Pain in the vulva, vagina, or rectum
  • Vulva or leg varicosities
  • Musculoskeletal issues like lower back pain, sciatica, pelvic-girdle-pain, rib pain, hand and wrist pain or numbness, or a flare of a previous injury

What does a pregnancy physio appointment entail?

Depending on which phase of your pregnancy you are in, and what symptoms you’re experiencing, will determine what the focus of the session will be.

What can a physio help with during pregnancy?

  • Improving bladder or bowel continence or voiding (aka holding when you want to and feeling satisfied after you empty!)
  • Alleviating vaginal or rectal heaviness
  • Managing pain in the vulva, vagina, or rectum
  • Management of varicosities (vulva and legs)
  • Musculoskeletal issues like lower back pain, sciatica, pelvic-girdle-pain, rib pain, hand and wrist pain or numbness, or a flare of a previous injury

Can a physio help with conceiving?

If you are unable to have penetrative sex due to pain or pelvic floor muscle tension, and this is contributing to an inability to fall pregnant, pelvic floor physiotherapy interventions can help you achieve penetrative sex.

How much does pregnancy physiotherapy cost?

A full list of our fees for pregnancy & pelvic physiotherapy services is listed here.

Service fees are standard with all of our practitioners, and across both our in-practice & telehealth consultation options. All new patients must book for an ‘initial consult’ – 60 minutes with your practitioner to ensure plenty of time to understand you and your symptoms.

Please note that you may receive partial refund to the below fees from Medicare if you hold a Team Care Arrangement health plan, or your private health insurance if you are covered for ‘Extras’. We also accept DVA cards & NDIS referrals – please feel free to reach out to us directly.
