Pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of issues related to the pelvic floor which you can think of as the supporting structures in the floor or base of the pelvis, made up of muscles & fascia. The purpose of the pelvic floor is to assist in bladder and bowel function, to help keep our pelvic organs inside and supported in the body and contributes to our sexual experience.

Questions? We’ve got answers.
How do you know if you need pelvic floor physiotherapy?
- Do you leak urine, wind or stool when you cough, sneeze or at any other time? It can be a small, moderate or large amount; consistently or just occasionally; or maybe just during exercise!
- Do you have to run to the toilet urgently or frequently because you feel you will not make it in time? Do you leak when rushing to the toilet?
- Do you have pain with your bladder filling or emptying?
- Do you have a feeling of heaviness or dragging in your pelvis, vagina or anus?
- Does it feel like you have “something down there” like a lump when you are washing yourself?
- Do you have decreased sensation with intercourse?
- Do you have pain with intercourse, inserting tampons or undergoing a doctor’s pelvic exam?
- Have you had a baby? Whether you’ve delivered vaginally or through caesarean having a pelvic floor check can be a great way to ensure that everything is healing well and if you have any issues (whether symptomatic or not!) they can be managed early before becoming an issue
- Have you had, or are you having, pelvic or abdominal surgery or radiation and want to prevent further or recurrent issues?
If you answered yes (or even maybe!) to any of these questions, then YES! These are not conditions that you need to live with, and we are here to help.
What happens at a pelvic floor physio appointment?
In short,
- We ask a lot of questions to get to know you, your symptoms and goals – we try and get a holistic picture to factors impacting your pelvic health.
- Where necessary, we may do some assessments to dig deeper into understanding of your condition. (There is a wide variety of assessments)
- We will start to create a treatment plan that will help achieve all of your goals.
We understand any first appointment with a new practitioner can be a tad daunting – but you can understand in more detail what to expect here.
How long does pelvic floor physiotherapy take to work?
We aim to arm you with some helpful strategies to reduce your symptoms from the first appointment, wherever possible!
The duration and frequency of appointments all depends on your condition, goals and how your body responds to different treatment tools. But, we can definitely give you a clearer picture of your individualised treatment plan and what you can expect following our first appointment.
Can I go to a pelvic floor appointment while on my period?
Absolutely! If our patients cancelled every time they had their period, we’d never manage to see you all! In saying this however, if you are uncomfortable with being seen whilst menstruating you may call us (outside the 24-hour cancellation period) to move your appointment.
On the flip side, if you are most symptomatic during or leading up to your period, this may be the best time to be assessed!
Can I see a pelvic floor physio while pregnant?
Absolutely! A pelvic health physiotherapist is a GREAT person to have in your village both during your pregnancy, and in your post-natal period. In addition to general pelvic health conditions (listed above) we can provide specialist support in birth preparation and recovery.
We do not perform internal vaginal exams in the first trimester of your pregnancy.
You can discover more about pregnancy physiotherapy services on this page.
How much does pelvic floor physiotherapy cost?
A full list of our fees for pelvic physiotherapy services is listed here.
Service fees are standard with all of our practitioners, and across both our in-practice & telehealth consultation options. All new patients must book for an ‘initial consult’ – 60 minutes with your practitioner to ensure plenty of time to understand you and your symptoms.
Please note that you may receive partial refund to the below fees from Medicare if you hold a Team Care Arrangement health plan, or your private health insurance if you are covered for ‘Extras’. We also accept DVA cards & NDIS referrals – please feel free to reach out to us directly.
