Pelvic Physiotherapy FAQs

Do I need a Women’s health physio?

  • Do you leak urine, wind or stool when you cough, sneeze or at any other time? It can be a small, moderate or large amount; consistently or just occasionally; or maybe just during exercise!
  • Do you have to run to the toilet urgently or frequently because you feel you will not make it in time? Do you leak when rushing to the toilet?
  • Do you have pain with your bladder filling or emptying?
  • Do you have a feeling of heaviness or dragging in your pelvis, vagina or anus?
  • Does it feel like you have “something down there” like a lump when you are washing yourself?
  • Do you have decreased sensation with intercourse?
  • Do you have pain with intercourse, inserting tampons or undergoing a doctor’s pelvic exam?
  • Have you had a baby? Whether you’ve delivered vaginally or through caesarean having a pelvic floor check can be a great way to ensure that everything is healing well and if you have any issues (whether symptomatic or not!) they can be managed early before becoming an issue
  • Have you had, or are you having, pelvic or abdominal surgery or radiation and want to prevent further or recurrent issues?

If you answered yes (or even maybe!) to any of these questions, then YES! These are not conditions that you need to live with, and we are here to help.

Do I have to have an internal vaginal or rectal exam?

Whilst an internal examination can be useful in assisting diagnosis and treatment planning, there are many instances where an examination is not performed on an initial session (or even subsequent sessions!). This may be due to high levels of pain and discomfort, anxiety or for whatever reason you may have that you wish not to have one performed! It is your body, and your personal safety and comfort is the utmost importance to us.

Can I still come if I’m on my period?

Absolutely! If our patients cancelled every time they had their period, we’d never manage to see you all! In saying this however, if you are uncomfortable with being seen whilst menstruating you may call us (outside the 24-hour cancellation period) to move your appointment.

On the flip side, if you are most symptomatic during or leading up to your period, this may be the best time to be assessed!

What should I wear?

Whatever you like! We have sheets to cover you and privacy screens to ensure you feel comfortable.

Should I bring anything to my appointment?

If you have a referral from your doctor, specialist or allied health therapist, please bring this along with any relevant scans, letters or reports. Please also bring your medication list along (including prescription and non-prescription supplements)

Are you LGBTIQ+ allies?

YES! Everyone has a pelvic floor and is welcome in this clinic.

What is the clinic accessibility like?

The clinic can be accessed from the car park via a ramp. Please note that our car park is gravel, and this may cause issues with smaller wheelchair wheels. You may require assistance getting from your car to the ramp if this will be an issue for your chair. Let us know and we can arrange for one of the therapists to run down and help you out if you haven’t got anyone who can attend the appointment with you.
